Helpful Tips
Welcome to our Tips section. Even though tips are very useful after the purchase of your new floor, we believe you deserve a few tips prior to buying your new floor.

1) The price of your new floor should be only one of many concerns before purchase.

2) Never assume the store is going to send their very best installer even if you request him. Most flooring installers are subcontractors, not employed by the store where you purchased the materials.

3) ASK FOR REFERENCES!!!! The store at which you purchase your new flooring should be more than happy to offer references upon request. (THINK TWICE IF THEY HESITATE!!) *NOTE: Because many flooring stores do not use employed installers, it is best to check the references of both the store and the installer to see exactly what the consumer was happy or unhappy with.

4) CHECK THE REFERENCES: Call 3-4 of them, ask how was the service, were the installers professional, were there any problems, how were they resolved?

5) PUT IT IN WRITING: If, for example, they claim they will fix your old floor before installing the new one, have it documented. Never assume their WORD is good enough.

Humidity Control

Hardwood floors are designed to compensate for a certain amount of shrinking and swelling; however, there is a limit.

High temperatures and an extreme range of humidity can cause your floor to shrink and expand more than it’s designed to.

50% humidity is perfect for your floor so you might consider buying a humidifier to regulate your moisture levels.

Keeping Your Wood Floor Clean

To clean up spills on your wood floor use a cleaner specifically designed for hardwood floors. Spray the cleaner directly on the floor and wipe until luster returns.

Doormats at the entrances to your home can prevent damaging abrasive materials from coming into contact with your wood floor.

High heels that have lost their protective caps can dent your floor, so can rocks stuck in the tread of your shoes so wipe your feet before entering your home.

There are chemicals in some species of wood that can cause your floor to develop an uneven color from strong sunlight so rearrange your rugs from time to time and filter strong light from your windows.

Refinishing and Repairs

When the finish has worn down to bare wood or you have a stain you can’t remove from your floor the best thing to do is refinish it.

Design Tips

Place walk off mats or area rugs at each entryway to collect dirt and grit that might be tracked in. These tiny particles act like sandpaper and will scratch your floor.
